Conor is an Emergency Department Support Officer in the Belfast Trust. We've asked Conor to talk to us about his role.

Hi Conor, Can you tell us how about your job and what you do from day to day

I work as the Emergency Department Support Officer. I am an integral part of the department’s Multidisciplinary Team that provides support in meeting the needs of all Patients who attend. The main elements of my role include providing a high level of clerical support, hospitality, minor maintenance, stores and general tidiness. In the EDSO role we undertake other duties as requested to ensure the department is welcoming, efficient, comfortable, and meets the needs of individual patients.

How long have you been in your current role?

I have been in my current job since April 2016.

What experience/education is required in order to preform this role?

4 GCSE’s at grade C or above to include English language or equivalent, a minimum of two years administrative experience, Ability to communicate effectively, Demonstrate the ability to work as part of a team, motivate staff and use initiative, Demonstrate the ability to be flexible and adaptable when working in a changing environment.

What is the biggest challenge in your role?

The biggest challenge in my role is adapting to an ever changing environment, dealing with the constant pressures and prioritising workloads, making sure that everyone that comes through our doors are treated equally and leave with a positive outlook.

What advice would you give to others looking for a job in your field?

Be prepared to work hard, this isn’t your average 9-5 admin role. You will be pushed and challenged daily but it’s worth it.

What do you like best about your role and working in HSC?

The best part of my role is working alongside the medical staff in helping patients and the general public.
